A 21-year-old Winnipeg woman was arrested in Winnipeg's inner city Friday night, accused of fatally stabbing her own sister during an argument.
Paige Chelsea Moloi-Straightnose, 18, was stabbed in the chest inside a William Avenue home Friday evening. She was taken to hospital in critical condition, but later died of her wounds.
Her older sister, 21-year-old Nebula Niome Moloi-Straightnose, was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
"This incident quite simply appears to have been a dispute between these two females," said Const. Jason Michalyshen, a spokesman for Winnipeg police. "Evidence at this stage of the investigation does suggest individuals, maybe including the victim and the accused, may have been consuming alcohol. It's a possible contributing factor."
Michalyshen said police were called to the two-storey house at 429 William Ave. about 8:15 p.m. Friday. Michalyshen said the two sisters appear to have gotten into some kind of dispute when the younger of the two grabbed a kitchen knife and confronted her sister. The older sister then grabbed the knife from the younger one and allegedly stabbed her in the chest, Michalyshen said.
"It makes it that much more tragic (that they're sisters)," Michalyshen said.
Police have had "some degree of contact" with both women in the past, he said.
A woman who identified herself as a cousin of the sisters said both are from the Keeseekoose First Nation, located about 60 km northeast of Yorkton, Sask.
The woman said their mother is also from that same community, but that the sisters hadn't lived there in some time.
Michalyshen said both sisters were living in Winnipeg and confirmed Nebula Moloi-Straightnose lived in the home where the stabbing took place. He was unaware of Paige Moloi-Straightnose's address.
Margaret Maltby, who lives a few doors down from the house, said she didn't know much about who lived there as the house, located across the street from the Victoria-Albert School yard, had just sold earlier this summer.
"They're very quiet. I see what I guess is a family sitting on the porch once in a while," she said.
Another neighbour said he saw a police officer carrying a small child out of the house Friday night. Michalyshen was unable to confirm whether anyone besides the sisters was in the home at the time of the stabbing.
