Orangeville remains to be ID'd Tuesday
By TAMARA CHERRY, QMI Agency

Sonia Varaschin, 42, went missing in Orangeville, Ontario last week.

CALEDON, Ont. -- Sonia Varaschin's family will have to wait until Tuesday for confirmation of whether human remains found in Caledon, Ont., are those of the missing 42-year-old nurse.

The autopsy needed to conclusively identify the remains found by a dog walker on Beech Grove Sideroad on Sunday morning wasn't scheduled until Tuesday, OPP announced Monday.

Varaschin's family reported her missing Aug. 30 after she didn't show up for work at a Mississauga, Ont., pharmaceutical firm.

Varaschin's Toyota Corolla was found in a downtown Orangeville, Ont., parking lot with blood on it. When police went to the nearby home where Varaschin lived alone, they found more blood, but no Varaschin.

It quickly became clear that Varaschin met with foul play.

In the ensuing days, officers from different units and police forces took part in an expansive search -- by land and air -- in areas around Orangeville.

On Friday, police asked the public to keep an eye out for a cream- or beige-coloured bed sheet and comforter, which may be soaked in blood.

The human remains found Sunday were a 10-minute drive from Varaschin's home.

Police said earlier they believed the culprit left Varaschin's home in her car early Monday morning before returning to downtown Orangeville "sometime later."

While a section of Beech Grove Sideroad was blocked off by police cruisers Monday, a smaller section within the area -- where the human remains were found -- remained roped off with police tape.

Officers scoured bushes along the road for evidence.

The road was expected to remain closed between St. Andrew's Rd. and Mountainview Rd. "until at least Wednesday," an OPP press release said.

Police asked anyone who noticed suspicious vehicles or people in the area to call 519-941-2522 ext. 2211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
