Deadly weekend in Winnipeg
By JASON HALSTEAD, QMI Agency

It definitely has been a long weekend for police.

It has been a chaotic spell on city streets as police have been kept jumping between stabbings, gunfire, assaults, robbery and arson.

"It's been a really busy weekend," said Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen. "Not only for our uniformed members, who have been attending high-priority calls, but for our specialty divisions where they have been faced with taking over all those investigations that are very in depth. Our resources are stretched and we're out there working hard."

It started Friday evening with a homicide for which the victim's sister was charged with manslaughter. Nebula Niome Moloi-Straightnose, 21, was arrested in Winnipeg's inner city Friday night, accused of fatally stabbing her own sister, Paige Chelsea Moloi-Straightnose, 18, during an argument inside a William Avenue home.

Then, just after midnight Saturday morning, several men robbed an Elmwood home after threatening residents with bear spray and possibly firearms.

The suspects stole electronic items and clothing before fleeing the area. No one was injured.

About 3:45 a.m. Saturday, police were called after sexual assault in the West End.

A white male suspect in his mid-20s is wanted after an 18-year-old woman walking alone about 3:45 a.m. in the area of Sargent Avenue and Langside Street was dragged into a back lane and assaulted.

As the suspect began forcibly removing her clothing, the victim screamed, alerting a male pedestrian who then shouted at the assailant, frightening him.

The victim was not physically injured.

Later in the day, in a period of just over three hours that stretched into Sunday, police were called to three separate incidents of gunfire in the city.

In the first incident, a man on foot shot at an occupied vehicle about 10:20 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Garry Street.

About 30 minutes later, police were called to the 500-block of St. John's Avenue in the North End after a witness heard shots. Police located several shell casings in the area.

Then, about 1:30 a.m., police were summoned to the New West Hotel on Main Street after a male suspect opened fire in the bar and possibly behind the business before fleeing with several other men.

Fortunately, no one was injured in any of the incidents.

"Any type of violent crime is concerning, but when we're dealing with three firearm incidents I think it's very concerning for the public," Michalyshen said.

About 1:45 a.m. Sunday, police and firefighters were called to the scene of a suspicious van fire on Hill Street in St. Boniface. Police said a suspect was observed fleeing the area.

Then at 2:30 a.m., police were called to a Canad Inns Windsor Park bar after a fight escalated into a stabbing incident.

A group of males had become involved in a physical altercation at the Elizabeth Road hotel complex that ended up with a 20-year-old sustaining a non life-threatening stab wound to the upper body.
