Accused killer filmmaker's trial to start soon
By JASMINE FRANKLIN, QMI Agency

Edmonton filmmaker Mark Twitchell is shown in an undated photo from his MySpace.com personal page.

EDMONTON -- Jury selection for local moviemaker and accused killer Mark Twitchell begins Tuesday.

The anticipated trial of Twitchell -- accused of luring and killing Johnny Altinger --is scheduled to begin Sept. 13 and continue until early November.

Jury selection begins Tuesday and could continue until Friday.

Though Altinger's body has never been found, police said they had enough evidence to lay charges.

The bizarre case began in October 2008 when Altinger, 38, went missing after heading to a southside house to meet a woman he met online.

It was the same location where Twitchell had recently filmed a movie.

Altinger hasn't been seen since.

Before his disappearance, Twitchell had filmed a movie about luring a man from an Internet dating site, killing and dismembering him.

One week previous to Altinger's disappearance, a man was seen running from the garage with someone in a black-and-gold-painted hockey mask.

Police later revealed the mask was used in Twitchell's movie and was found in his St. Albert home.

Twitchell was arrested on Halloween at his parents' home. Police don't believe there are any other suspects.

Working as an independent movie director and producer at the time, Twitchell had previously compared himself to Dexter Morgan -- a fictional television police detective who doubles as a murderer of serial killers.
