QUEBEC CITY – At first police thought a woman found dying on a Quebec City street last month had been car surfing, but the investigation took a turn Thursday when the victim’s husband was arrested.
Now it’s believed the woman, who died later in hospital, was struck by an SUV in a violent domestic dispute.
The husband, 48, was arrested in the Quebec City suburb of Charlesbourg and faces a charge of criminal negligence causing death as well as hit and run.
Marie-France Rheaume, 40, was found on a residential street on Aug. 10 after witnesses said she fell from the roof of a vehicle that sped off. She died of her injuries 17 days later.
Police initially said the victim had been riding on the roof or hood of a Chevy Blazer, but it’s now more likely that she flipped onto the roof after the truck struck her.
“The investigation allowed us to confirm that it was a domestic dispute,” said Quebec City police spokeswoman Catherine Viel.
The husband’s arrest and arraignment Thursday took place the same day as Rheaume’s funeral.
