SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - A man shot by police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is being charged with attempted murder.
Police shot Christoper Syrette, 40, after he allegedly stabbed a woman in an apartment on the evening of Sept. 3.
The woman suffered "wounds to her extremities," said Insp. Art Pluss of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released hospital.
Police are not releasing the woman's age or relationship to Syrette.
The Special Investigations Unit - a watchdog that's called in any time a civilian is killed, sexually assaulted or severely injured in an interaction with police - was tight-lipped about their investigation into the Syrette's shooting.
Syrette was taken to a hospital in Toronto and is in stable condition, said Special Investigations Unit spokesperson Monica Hudon.
The officer who shot Syrette remains on active duty.
"The use of force is consistent with expected duties," said Pluss.
"On a daily, basis there's occasion for the police to have to intervene physically to affect a lawful purpose."
Police officers can fire their weapons when they think another person "will suffer grievous bodily harm or death," he said.
