SAGUENAY, Que. – An alleged peeping Tom with a history of sex crimes faces charges after cops seized surveillance cameras hidden in the bathrooms of his two young female tenants.
Claude Dore, 47, was charged with voyeurism in Saguenay, Que., 200 kilometres north of Quebec City.
One of Dore's tenants was shocked the seemingly amiable and generous landlord allegedly committed such a sordid violation of trust.
“He was super nice. He always gave me everything,” said Carole-Ann Espin Tremblay, a 21-year-old cafe worker. “One time he even lent me money to buy a car. I never thought he would do this to me.”
Allegations against Dore have not been proven court.
Tremblay occupied one room in the basement of Dore’s home on a quiet residential street, while a young mother lived in the other unit attached to the house.
The mother’s boyfriend discovered a camera inside a bathroom fan on Tuesday evening and informed Tremblay. Before police arrived, Tremblay found another camera in her bathroom.
Both devices were connected by wires to the upper floor where Dore lives, said Saguenay police spokesman Dominic Corneau.
Police seized a makeshift observation post from Dore that included a computer, CDs, DVDs and memory sticks.
Tremblay said she feels violated.
“It’s disgusting,” she said. “When I got dressed or undressed, the camera was pointed directly at me.”
She added that her friends have also used her bathroom.
Dore has prior convictions for several crimes, including sexual assault, indecent acts, break and enter and assault.
He was charged in 2005 with threatening his court-ordered sex therapist.
