KINGSTON, Ont. - The man who murdered 14-year-old Stephanie Rengel has been charged with attempted murder after a prison fight which ended with guards fatally shooting another inmate.
David Bagshaw, 21, who is serving a life sentence at Millhaven Institution, was charged with attempted murder on Wednesday. He also was shot by guards during the prison altercation and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Sentenced in the fall of 2009, Bagshaw must serve 10 years in jail before becoming eligible for parole. He lured his victim out of her East York home and stabbed her repeatedly on Jan. 1, 2008.
He was released from hospital after being shot by prison guards and returned to the institution.
Bagshaw and two other inmates were involved in the incident in Millhaven's gym on March 20.
Police fatally shot inmate Jordan Trudeau, 29, in the chest as he was stabbing a third convict.
An investigation determined the guards used proper protocol in the shooting and were cleared of any wrong doing.
Trudeau arrived at the prison on May 12, 2010 and was serving eight years for robbery and accessory after the fact for a murder on Manitoulin Island in 2009.
Trudeau's victim, a 34-year-old inmate, suffered severe but non-life threatening injuries.
Bagshaw was just days away from his 18th birthday when he killed Rengel but was tried and sentenced in adult court.
He committed the crime on the urging of his jealous girlfriend, 15-year-old Melissa Todorovic. Also tried as an adult, she was sentenced to life with no chance of parole for seven years, the maximum allowed for someone under 16.
