The death of a 14-month-old girl in Calgary last year has now been classified as a homicide.

On May 2, 2010, police were called to a home for a 14-month-old girl in medical distress.

Sarvia Elizabeth Velasquez was rushed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

An autopsy was inconclusive and further tests were needed.

In an autopsy report released to investigators in December, the cause of death was identified as asphyxia and found to be non-accidental.

"The manner of death has now been classified as a homicide,” said cops in a statement Wednesday.

Police will release more details in a Wednesday press conference.
