The mother accused of killing three of her daughters and the first wife of her husband has filed paperwork to appeal her conviction.

On Wednesday, Tooba Yahya, 42, followed in the footsteps of her husband, Mohammad, 58, and her son, Hamed, 21.

On Jan. 29, the Shafias were each found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, Geeti, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammad, 52.

The bodies of the four women were found in a car submerged in the Rideau Canal at the Kingston Mills locks on June 30, 2009. Court heard the family was returning from a family vacation at the time.

The Crown argued the murders were planned to "restore (the) family's honour" after the oldest girls had boyfriends.

The defence argued the women's deaths were a tragic accident.

"We are not murderers," Tooba told the jury during her testimony. "I am a mother."
