TORONTO - Creepy might be the best word to describe Luka Magnotta.
In fact, in retrospect, he might have been the creepiest person I have ever interviewed.
I can’t think of anybody weirder. I mean this guy was really out there. Coherent but not connecting.
But did I see him as one day being an alleged killer?
I saw him creepy in more of a seedy side of life way — perhaps a world of drugs and debauchery.
If anything I thought he might be more of a danger to himself.
It was September of 2007 and I had heard this character over the airwaves talking with Newstalk 1010 talkshow host John Downs, then of AM 640 passionately insisting he was not in any way connected to Karla Homolka as was rumoured.
“I have lost modelling jobs and have been receiving death threats,” he told Downs. “People are so stupid because I don’t even know Karla Homolka.”
Thinking it would be interesting to interview a potential boyfriend of the schoolgirl killer I tracked him down and arranged an interview.
A family member reminded me that I said over the phone that I felt nervous to meet this guy off site so I arranged for him to come into the Sun building at 333 King St. E.
He came in and photographer Veronica Henri and I met him in the lobby and brought him into our cafeteria. He seemed under the influence of something as he walked very slowly.
He looked like he might fall asleep in the chair.
But the one area that piqued his interest and energy was Karla Homolka.
“I want to set the record straight,” he told me. “I not only have never dated Karla, I have never even met her.”
And yet, he insisted, the rumours persisted online and were landing him death threats and “ruining” his life. He said someone killed his Pomeranian and had stolen his SUV.
He also mentioned that he had been working as an “adult film” actor, stripper and male escort and that his “life was spinning out of control.”
Veronica and I offered to get him some medical help.
“I have a therapist,” he said. Magnotta also said he was addicted to cosmetic surgery.
It was very bizarre. The whole thing is surreal.
Anything is possible as police look for him. He could be dead or on the move and I know both Toronto Police and the OPP are looking for him here as well as Montreal Police combing their city where they allege a heinous murder took place.
If Luka does read this, my advice is to turn yourself in to the authorities immediately and let the professionals take control of this situation.
When I met him he wasn’t unlikable but definitely transfixed into his own world — speaking in a dull monotone voice, his eyes at times glossed over.
It was kind of like speaking to somebody from another planet — but a guy who seemed like the ultimate attention seeker.
Still, before he left our building, Luka was adamant somebody was out to destroy him.
“I just wish it would stop,” he said of the “smear” campaign his enemies had thrust upon him. “I wish they would leave me alone.”
At the time most people on blogs and chat sites said it was Magnotta himself who was creating the non link between he and Homolka.
“Very weird,” was our photographer Henri’s recollection. “I wondered why someone, who seemed to be bright, took so many wrong turns However, he did convince me that he never dated Karla.”
Later I checked with his modelling agency who verified he did some gigs for them and that they too were concerned with his erratic behaviour.
On the way out I asked him if he was trying to look like Paul Bernardo to which he gave me a bit of a smirk.
Like I said before. Creepy.
