SHERBROOKE, Que. - Police have made an arrest after 24 blood-filled syringes were found in various articles of clothing in stores throughout Quebec's Eastern Townships.

A 49-year-old man was picked up around noon Thursday at the courthouse in this town two hours east of Montreal.

Eight customers and store staff were pricked while handling the clothing over the past several months, prompting police to assign two full-time investigators to the file.

Police have not said if the blood in the needles was contaminated.

In early May, a man found a dirty needle in children's shorts for sale at an Intersport shop in Sherbrooke.

Staff searched all of the store's inventory and found four more needles stained with a reddish-brown liquid, said police.

Two days earlier, a shopper at a Zellers store in Sherbrooke was sent to hospital after being pricked with a dirty needle.

A man was also pricked in January at a Hart store in Coaticook, Que., near the border with New Hampshire.
