BARRIE, Ont. — Police are investigating after a woman’s body was discovered in a dumpster beside an east-end apartment building.
Police said a man discovered the body shortly before noon when he was putting out his garbage.
Police say the woman was in her 20s but they have not released her identity.
“It’s suspicious in nature,” Barrie police Const. Toni Dufour said at the scene.
A pungent odour wafted through the air. The area was shut down to traffic while police investigated.
Ed Fzyperski, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 40 years, said the discovery was surprising.

“It’s so quiet around here,” Fzyperski said. “You hear kids playing or see people out for a smoke.
“It’s random unless something’s going on in that apartment we’re not aware of,” he added.
Melanie Hrynkiw, 24, was allowed to briefly enter her apartment when she returned from running errands.
Hrynkiw, who has lived at the apartment for several years, said she had dropped off her garbage in the dumpster around 10:30 a.m. and didn’t notice anything suspicious.
“I’m short, so I can’t see in, but it’s awful to think she might have been in there,” Hrynkiw said. “Being a woman and knowing it’s another woman in there is really unnerving.”
She said the usually quiet apartments don’t have locks on the outside doors, but she’s convinced the landlord will change that after this “really awful thing.”
Alex Crocker, 22, wasn’t allowed into his apartment when he arrived home from work.
“It kind of freaks me out that I would have thrown (a bag) of cat litter on a dead body,” he said.
Elaine Pfrimmer, who lives nearby, was walking her dog when she came upon the Steel Street crime scene and was disturbed to hear about the suspicious death.
“I’ve lived in Barrie since 1971 when it used to be a nice, quiet, safe place. You could leave your doors unlocked. But not anymore,” she said. “I’m beginning to think it isn’t very safe (here) any more.”
