TORONTO — Provincial police have charged a Toronto man with voyeurism after a cottage he owns near Peterborough, Ont., was allegedly rented to vacationers with tiny hidden cameras to spy on residents.
And police are concerned that some of secretly captured images may end up on the Internet.
Derek James, 39, has also been charged with mischief by interfering with the lawful use and enjoyment of property.
Provincial police Const. Iain McEwan from Peterborough County said officers responded to a Chemong Lake cottage May 5 following a call from renters. The lake is about 145 km northeast of Toronto.
McEwan said a suspect was charged on June 23.
"The cottage has security cameras mounted outside and throughout the interior of the building," he said on Tuesday. "These cameras are connected to a video recorder that recorded the activities of any persons renting the property."
Police won't reveal if any of the cameras were in the bedroom.
James was released on his own recognizance and is slated to make an appearance in Peterborough court Aug. 23.
