Police fire at erratic Montreal driver

MONTREAL - A man is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after police shot him when he drove erratically in a recreational area in this city early Saturday, investigators said.

Police said the 28-year-old man was getting off a night cruise boat moored at an Old Port of Montreal wharf around 3 a.m. when he got into his Ford pickup truck and drove off.

A Montreal police agent intercepted him shortly after.

Instead of stopping, the man accelerated, dragging the police officer along with the truck, police said.

That's when the cop fired in his direction, wounding the man in the upper body, police said. There were two other passengers in the car. None of them were injured.

The officer involved was not injured, but was treated for shock.

The boat company hosting the party that the man attended said they are co-operating with Quebec provincial police.
