RCMP officers shot at during arrest
By QMI Agency

RCMP members at the Kimmirut detachment in Iqaluit were shot at by a man early Saturday morning while questioning a woman.

Police say a young intoxicated female banged on the residence door of one the police officers at 2 a.m. and when he responded, she informed him that they were in danger.

She was immediately brought to the detachment for her own safety but while officers were speaking with her, a male suspect shot multiple rounds at the office. Bullets struck the building, the police truck and resulting in considerable damage.

Some rounds apparently struck Northwest Tel telephone equipment, which currently has left parts of the community without telephone service, a police statement said.

The RCMP says approximately 10 people made a citizen's arrest and commended them for putting their lives at risk to assist RCMP members.

The 10 "secured both him and the rifle until the Emergency Response Team from Iqaluit was able to take control of him and restore the safety of the community."

Police say the community is secured and safe and the investigation is ongoing.
