TORONTO - Two boaters discovered a suitcase containing a badly decomposed torso while out on Lake Ontario Wednesday morning.

Police say they received a call shortly after 11 a.m. about a suspicious incident at Bluffer's Park in Scarborough. Upon arrival, the two boaters - a man and a woman - said they found the suitcase floating 2.5 kilometres off shore.

"The boaters secured the suitcase and towed it into shore," Det. Leslie Dunkley said Wednesday afternoon.

He says the marine unit and 41 Division police officers attended the scene, searching the area for more evidence.

"Nothing was located at this time," he said.

Blaine Reardon often sits on a dock near the yacht club where the boaters brought the suitcase to shore and saw the boaters tow the suitcase -- a large one with wheels -- off the lake.

"They took the body and they moved it all over the place, then they took it over behind the building," he said. "Then the coroners came and they opened it and they found that it was a body."

Police say they cannot confirm whether the remains belong to Guang Hua Liu, whose body parts were found scattered in the east and west ends of the GTA last month. A postmortem examination is scheduled for Thursday morning.

"We've been in touch with Peel Region Police," Det. Dunkley said. "We can't determine at this time if it's one and the same."

It is also not confirmed whether the torso belongs to a male or a female body.

"Until we get the results of that postmortem examination, Toronto Police homicide squad is treating this as a suspicious death investigation," he said.

While the details of the suitcase and its other contents could not be revealed, Dunkley said the piece of luggage was "sufficient to contain that of a torso."

The boaters were interviewed by police Wednesday afternoon. Police are appealing to the public for any information to help identify the human remains.

Most recently, the body parts of Guang Hua Liu - a 41-year-old single mother - were found in various spots around the GTA starting Aug. 15. Some remains are yet to be located.

Her estranged boyfriend was charged with second-degree murder soon after. Peel Police said last week that Chun Qi Jiang, 40, was a "person of interest" early in the investigation.
