The father-in-law of imprisoned mafioso Vito Rizzuto died this week of natural causes in Montreal’s north end.

Leonardo Cammalleri, 92, was found dead in his home on Wednesday.

He had been the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Italian authorities for a 1955 murder and had been living in hiding in Montreal since police discovered his whereabouts in the early 2000s. The Italian government never asked for his extradition, however.

It was another man, Rosario Guerreri, who initially admitted to the 1955 murder and Italian police arrested him in Italy. However, Guerreri changed his tune in jail and named three men, including Cammalleri, as the real killers. Cammalleri was never arrested for the crime.

Guerreri immigrated to Montreal and opened a restaurant in the city’s Plateau neighbourhood.

On March 5, 1972, one of his employees found him in the restaurant murdered and soaked in blood. Guerreri was stabbed 12 times with a hatchet. A knife was lodged in his heart. Guerreri’s murder remains unsolved.

Sources told QMI Agency they are wondering if Cammalleri’s funeral will be delayed until after Oct. 6, which is when Rizzuto is scheduled to be released from U.S. prison. He is serving time for a 1981 mob hit in New York.
