The small Muslim community in P.E.I. is on edge after a bottle of gas and posters that read "Defeat jihad" were found on the doorstep of a mosque in Charlottetown - the latest in a string of vague threats.

Members of the Masjid Dar as-Salam Mosque discovered the posters and gas Thursday morning, and called police, said Zain Esseghaier, spokesman for the Muslim Society of P.E.I.

"People are surprised, upset and concerned about their safety and the safety of the people who are visiting the mosque," Esseghaier said Monday.

One year ago, while the building was under construction, a pig head was found nailed to a post on the site, Esseghaier said, and in the summer, a contractor's truck parked at the mosque was torched.

"When you have a truck that's burned on your property and messages such as 'Defeat jihad,' left on your property, the only conclusion you can reach is someone is trying to send us a very threatening message. We are led to believe we are being targeted and that threat should be taken very seriously," he said.

The mosque, the first permanent one on the island, opened July 14. The society estimates about 500 Muslims reside in P.E.I.

Police are investigating.
