Pair arrested in death of six-year-old girl
By Damien Wood, QMI Agency
CALGARY - Police have arrested two people in connection with the death of six-year-old Meika Dawn Jordan — her father and stepmother. Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon were arrested Sunday night without incident and are awaiting formal charges. Jordan was injured in her home on Temple Dr. N.E., the evening of Nov. 13, 2011, and taken to hospital. She died the next day from what police have since discovered were multiple incidents of blunt force trauma. Homicide Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus said “we believe both ... had exclusive opportunity to the child,” when hinting arrests were imminent just this past Thursday. Police have said the pair were the only suspects being investigated in connection with the girl’s death. Initial claims by some family members that the girl fell down a flight of stairs were later proven false by her autopsy, which showed multiple blunt force trauma injuries to her head and abdomen. Also, police believe she suffered third-degree burns to the palm and fingers of one hand. At the time of her death, Meika was in the care of her father and her stepmother. She died with her biological mother, Kyla Guttman, at her side. Insp. Paul Stacey said almost a year after they began, investigators are very satisfied with the arrest. “There’s something about the murder of a child that really tugs at the heart,” he said. “The homicide guys never took their eyes off the ball on this one. “They felt like they owed it to Meika ... kids are truly innocent victims — you couldn’t get any more innocent — because they’re so vulnerable.” On Twitter: @SUNDamienWood
