EDMONTON -- An Edmonton mother who bit a woman who was having an affair with her husband and used a stiletto-type shoe and a dust pan handle to attack her was jailed Wednesday.

Jillian Amber Towns, 31, was handed a nine-month sentence, to be followed by 12 months probation, after pleading guilty to break and enter and assault with a weapon.

The mother of three -- who tearfully apologized to the victim in court -- was also ordered to submit a sample for the national DNA databank in Ottawa and is prohibited from possessing weapons for 10 years.

"I just want to say I am sorry," Towns said, acknowledging that what she did was "bad and wrong."

She also talked about needing to get out so she could be with her kids.

"They need their mom," she said, wiping away tears.

According to agreed facts, on Nov. 1, 2009, Towns had been in a 30-month relationship with Paul Jones, They had been married for two months and had a 14-month-old son.

That day, Towns learned her husband had been cheating on her with a woman who worked with him, Tracy Fiesel.

The next day, Towns and Jones went to Fiesel's home where Towns pushed her way in through the partially open door after Fiesel saw her and tried to close it.

Once inside the home, Towns hit Fiesel in the face multiple times and bit her on the right thumb. She also struck Fiesel several times with a high-heeled, stiletto-type shoe and pulled her hair, according to the agreed facts.

She ended up pulling Fiesel out of the home and the attack resumed on the front lawn with Towns continuing to punch and bite the victim. A witness saw Towns on top of the woman and punching her as she screamed for help.

During the assault, Fiesel felt something sharp jabbing at the side of her head and believed Towns was trying to stab her with a sharp, red object. In fact, Towns was hitting her with the broken handle of a dust pan.

Fiesel tried to cover her face with her hands and received multiple small cuts to her hands and the left side of her face, according to the agreed facts.

At some point, Towns also dumped a bottle of Febreeze, a household odour eliminator product, on Fiesel.

As well, Towns swore at Fiesel during the attack, calling her a "bitch" and a "dirty whore," and yelling that "no one would want her now."

Fiesel was able to run to a neighbour's yard when Towns let her go and then Towns left the scene.

Fiesel was taken to hospital with multiple injuries, including bite marks on her chest, both arms, right thumb and lower left leg. According to a victim impact statement, she was off work for a year due to her physical injuries and mental stress.

Towns was arrested at her home on Nov. 9, 2009.

Defence lawyer Kathryn Quinlan told court Towns has issues with drugs and alcohol and noted she was a "victim of circumstances and poor choices by other people."
