ST. THOMAS, Ont. - A 17-year-old male from St. Thomas is charged with attempted murder after a boy, 9, was stabbed in the neck.

Police responded to an emergency call on Mitchell St. and found the nine-year-old boy bleeding profusely from a large cut across his neck. Police said the wound was caused by a knife.

Emergency Medical Services transported the boy to St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital and then to London's Children's Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and is in stable condition.

Police could not comment on what lead up to the stabbing or if either of the two two involved lived at the Mitchell St. home.

The 17-year-old, also from St. Thomas, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. He went to weekend video bail court and remanded in custody until Tuesday for a court appearance.

Police vehicles remained on Mitchell St. throughout Sunday.

A small group of neighbours across the street said they were alerted to emergency vehicles arrival Saturday night but knew no more of the stabbing.

One young man, however, said the residence is home to a number of foster children. Police would not confirm that.
