CORNWALL, Ont. — A 20-year-old Quebec man is accused of burning down a house Saturday morning in an attempt to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Police say they arrested the St. Regis, Que., resident in Cornwall on Sunday while investigating the blaze that broke out around 3 a.m. Saturday.

“It was domestic related,” Const. Melanie Labelle said. “It is alleged that he started the fire due to his ex-girlfriend being in the residence.”

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder and arson.

Bruce Marshall said he was just preparing for bed when he heard something smash through his porch window.

“I smelled something burning,” he said, adding that he managed to wake up his landlord and ensure all of the home’s occupants escaped without injury.

He said his sister-in-law had just broken up with her boyfriend earlier that day.
