A third suspect has been arrested and charged in the alleged confinement and sex assault of a teen in Nova Scotia.
John Leonard MacKean, 63, of Lower Sackville, N.S., appeared in court Tuesday afternoon, charged with sexual assault and communicating with the purpose of obtaining sexual services from a person under 18.
Officers arrested MacKean in Fredericton on Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.
The boy's mother appeared outside the courtroom as MacKean was led through the front doors with no handcuffs. She told reporters she was taken aback by the sudden arrest and had to rush to the courthouse to see the suspect.
MacKean will remain in custody until his bail hearing Thursday.
In late September, a 16-year-old boy turned up at a rural home in Upper Chelsea, N.S., half naked, chained at the ankles and wrists, and begging for help.
Police said the young man told them he had been snatched from the street in Halifax, driven to a remote shack and chained up, and that he was raped him over a period of two weeks before he escaped.
The teen fled after eight days in captivity, making it two kilometres down a gravel road, his ankles and wrists still in chains. Terry Frauzel and his family found him in their yard, cut his shackles and contacted police.
After a week-long chase through four provinces for two suspects, police found one of the two suspects dead in northern Ontario, and arrested the other nearby a few days later.
The boy told police and one of his rescuers that he overheard his captors talk about selling or killing him.
Wayne Alan Cunningham, 31, was found dead about three hours outside of Thunder Bay, Ont., on Oct. 3.
David James Leblanc, 47, Cunningham's common-law partner of 10 years, was arrested nearby a few days later. Leblanc appeared in court last week, and is charged with seven offences in the case, including kidnapping, forcible confinement, uttering threats and sexual assault.
In a separate case, Leblanc is accused of sexually assaulting a two-year-old boy and a five-year-old boy in different towns in southwest Nova Scotia and making child pornography. He was out on bail awaiting trial on those charges when he allegedly imprisoned and raped the teen in Upper Chelsea. He is due back in court on Dec. 19 in this case.
