MONTREAL - A former Quebec high school teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to using a school computer to access child pornography as well as hundreds of other porn sites — sometimes while his students were in the same classroom.

Robin Lavoie, 36, had originally pleaded not guilty but changed his mind Thursday afternoon after Crown prosecutors presented their evidence.

They alleged Lavoie visited at least 1,000 pornographic web pages on his school's computer, including 560 web pages in a one-hour span on Sept. 25, 2009.

Lavoie worked in the town of Saguenay, Que., about 200 km north of Quebec City. He hasn't taught since his arrest in October 2009.

Lavoie said in court that he "had a lack of judgment" and an "unhealthy curiosity."

The Crown said he mostly looked at adult porn sites and did so during his breaks from teaching. However, the Crown said Lavoie also accessed some child pornography.

One of Lavoie's former students told the court she once saw a porn site on his computer when she walked to his desk to ask a question.

Lavoie's lawyer, Luc Tourangeau, said his client "took the right decision to settle the file."

Lavoie could face up to 45 days in jail. He will be required to offer the court a sample of his DNA and to register as a sex offender. A report on Lavoie's past sexual behaviour will also be prepared for the court. He is due back in court in January.
