A New Brunswick man has been sentenced to life in prison for brutally raping and strangling his ex-girlfriend, then leaving her body in the woods.

On Tuesday, a jury found Fred Prosser, 33, guilty of first-degree murder, sexual assault causing bodily harm and sexual assault in the 2010 death of Sabrina Patterson, 23.

Patterson, a mother of two from Riverview, went missing Oct. 29. Cops arrested Prosser on Nov. 4. Two days later, police found Patterson's body in the woods near Shenstone, a few kilometres from Prosser's home.

She'd been beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled to death.

Investigators found her DNA on Prosser's body, and her blood on his jeans and in his truck.

The pair had been dating on and off for about nine years.

He was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 25 years for her murder, plus seven years for sexual assault causing bodily harm, and five years for sexual assault.
