TORONTO -- A Scarborough, Ont., man who inflicted a "reign of terror for a decade" on his wife and kids deserved much more than the 10-year prison sentence a judge imposed on him, a Crown attorney stated in a Court of Appeal document.
Crown attorney Peter Scrutton is appealing the sentence against the 40-year-old offender -- dubbed the "husband from hell" -- for his "reprehensible conduct" that included forcing his wife to have sex with his friends.
Justice Laurence Pattillo last January reduced the 10-year sentence by four years "based on the totality principle" and then subtracted another four years and a day for time already served. That left the abuser with only two years less a day to serve.
"Totality" is a principle of law that determines that a sentence on various offences shouldn't be added together to reach an unreasonable or oppressively long term similar to American-style sentences.
