ST-MATHIAS-SUR-RICHELIEU, QUE. — A man awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-spouse killed himself Thursday in front of another woman he allegedly kidnapped and bound in his garage.
Rene Theriault, 48, and his second alleged victim broke up a few months ago but they stayed friendly. Police say he kidnapped her from her home on Thursday and drove her to his garage.
QMI Agency learned that Theriault hanged himself in front of the woman, but local police didn't confirm the method he used to commit suicide. The woman freed herself and called police.
A judge released Theriault in December 2010 while he awaited trial for the murder of Chantal Charbonneau in October of the same year. He was accused of strangling Charbonneau. Her body was found in a car about 400 km away from his home in Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, which is located about 40 km southeast of Montreal.
