PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — A 27-year-old man is accused of spitting in his 77-year-old grandmother's face because she refused to give him money on New Year's Eve and then fighting with police during his arrest.

After spitting in his grandmother's face, the suspect smashed her phone against a wall and broke a bedroom window, police said.

When police arrived and attempted to arrest the suspect, he allegedly kicked one of the officers in the chest.

The suspect is charged with assault, assaulting a peace officer, two counts of mischief under $5,000 and one count of breaching probation.

Police refused to name the accused, citing concerns about identifying the grandmother.
