Daring luxury car thieves were like Gone in Sixty Seconds

TORONTO - They were like a team out of the movie Gone in Sixty Seconds, luxury car thieves prowling expensive neighbourhoods to boost Maseratis, Mercedes and Range Rovers.

And sometimes, the daring duo didn’t even have to break a sweat: They already had the key in hand to simply drive the sports car away.

In a Newmarket, Ont., court Tuesday, Andrzej Zalewski, 34, and accomplice Damian Kaleta, 29, pleaded guilty to numerous counts of break and enter, car theft as well as the possession of 99 stolen car keys to vehicles worth $5 million.

“Zalewski has been the subject of multiple projects throughout the years — Projects Romeo, Ace and Underground,” York Regional Police Const. Valdy Krawczyk said outside the courtroom. “This time we began tracking him in July 2011 after a Maserati was stolen in Vaughan.”

And this time, it looks like there will finally be jail time in the car thief’s future.
