Phoenix Sinclair was abused and murdered at age five by her mother, Samantha Kematch and Kematch's boyfriend, Karl McKay, at their Fisher River First Nation home in June 2005, a few months after she was returned to Kematch's care and her CFS file closed. Her death went undiscovered for nine months. (HANDOUT)
WINNIPEG - hearing testimony which looks closely at the interactions between CFS and Phoenix from late 2004 through the spring of 2005 — the last few months of the little girl's short life when she fell off the radar of Winnipeg CFS for the final time.
By June 14 of that year, Phoenix, then 5, was dead of horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother and de facto stepdad and her body buried in a shallow grave near a dump on the Fisher River First Nation.
Samantha Kematch and Karl McKay are serving life sentences in prison after being convicted in 2008 of first-degree murder.
