Blood trail led from train tracks to Tim Hortons, cop tells court

KENORA, Ont. — A police officer testified Tuesday that an investigation of a man hit by a train took a turn when he noticed a trail of blood leading from the tracks to a nearby Tim Hortons where, less than an hour earlier, he saw the accused murderer with blood stains on his clothes.
Provincial police constable Ryan Royal told court he was on break with several other officers around 3 a.m. on March 21, 2009, when Kenneth Ivall entered the Tim Hortons. Royal said he noted blood-like stains on Ivall’s shoes and a red stain on the brim of his white ball cap.
Less than an hour later — around 3:45 a.m. — the call came in that a westbound train had struck a body on the tracks in this northwestern Ontario town.
