Man uses shovel to paddle stolen canoe to U.S.
By DAN DAKIN, QMI Agency

Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, N.Y.

ST. CATHARINES, ONT. - Using a shovel for an oar, a B.C. man paddled a stolen canoe across the Niagara River from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., to Youngstown, N.Y., early Thursday, a U.S. border official said.

“He had a desire to go to New York City,” said Border Patrol spokesman Michael Scioli.

Scioli said he stole the canoe from a residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake and ventured across the lake before border guards spotted him at about 2 a.m. trying to exit Fort Niagara State Park.

The man was arrested and charged with illegal entry into the U.S. He’s currently being held at a federal detention centre.
