OTTAWA - OTTAWA - Canada's top court will rule Friday on the case of a battered woman who hired a hit man to kill her abusive estranged husband after police ignored her pleas for help.

In 2008, Nicole Ryan, a Nova Scotia high school teacher who'd endured some 15 years of abuse, attempted to pay a contract killer $25,000 to knock off her husband.

The "hit man" was an undercover RCMP officer.
