Ashley Smith guard who videotaped death was following orders, inquest hears
By Kevin Connor, QMI Agency

Ashley Smith

TORONTO - A prison guard who videotaped Ashley Smith while she strangled herself to death with a cloth told a coroner’s inquest he was following orders.

Smith, 19, killed herself on Oct. 19, 2007, at the Grand Valley prison in Kitchener as guards watched.

The guards, like Ruby Burnett, were allegedly told not to intervene.

“There are a lot of directives I am bound to follow. There are consequences to disobey an order. I just remember being asked to use the video camera,” Burnett said.

“We were not supposed to enter the cell while we could hear her breathing.”
