Ex New Jersey cop accused of hiding HIV from partner
By QMI Agency

Charles Martina. (Somerset County Prosecutor's Office)

OTTAWA — Police have charged a 65-year-old former New Jersey police captain with aggravated sexual assault for allegedly failing to disclose with a partner the fact he has HIV, according to reports.

The accused, Charles Martina, of North Plainfield, N.J., is believed to regularly come to Canada along the Ottawa Valley and Hwy. 17 corridor on his way to northern Ontario for fishing trips.

The investigation began on May 22, 2012, after a woman shared her story about Martina with police.

The sexual encounters took place between July and September 2006, police said.

Ottawa police are also contacting police in areas Martina was known to frequent to let them know of the criminal charge.

Anyone who has had sexual contact with Martina is asked to contact Ottawa police and seek the advice of their health-care provider.
