CALGARY — Suspected Guatemalan war criminal Jorge Sosa has lost his final battle to avoid deportation from Canada — even though he's already been sent packing.

The Supreme Court on Thursday denied Sosa leave to appeal his expulsion, effectively ending any legal efforts to avoid being returned to the U.S. on immigration charges.

In September, Sosa was transported from Calgary to California, where he is accused of lying on his application for permanent residency and ultimately U.S. citizenship.

The transfer came a month after an Alberta Court of Appeal judge denied Sosa leave to appeal a lower court ruling that he should be deported.

A three-member Supreme Court panel dismissed Sosa's bid to argue his case in the nation's highest court.
