MONTREAL -- A Quebec judge sentenced a former biker to 20 years in prison Friday after the accused pleaded guilty to helping a contract killer murder 12 people during the province's biker war in the 90s.
Marcel "The Mayor" Demers, 56, was co-leader of the Rock Machine biker gang. He will serve 12-and-a-half years in prison after his time already served in detention awaiting a verdict is calculated.
Demers admitted to giving information to hit man Gerald Gallant in order to have rivals murdered between the years 1996 and 2000, during the biker war between the Machine and Hells Angels.
Demers admitted to asking Gallant to commit 12 murders. Gallant became a police informant in 2006.
Police arrested Demers during an operation called Baladeur, which caught 11 suspected bikers. One of those, Jean-Claude Gagne, was sentenced in November to 15 years for conspiracy to commit murder.
The others arrested in the case return to court in early March.
