BROCKVILLE, Ont. — A Brockville man has been found guilty of manslaughter for starving his disabled brother to death in 2008.

Jerry Hawley dabbed his eyes with a tissue as the jury came back with the verdict Thursday morning.

Hawley’s brother, Jamie, 41, suffered a brain injury as a baby that left him with the mental capacity of a 6-year-old and confined to a wheelchair.

When he died May 26, 2008, Jamie weighed only 57 lbs., three more pounds than he weighed at the age of 10.

An autopsy concluded Jamie died of pneumonia, starvation and infected sores.

Jerry Hawley was charged with second-degree murder, but admitted to the lesser manslaughter charge during closing statements this week. On Thursday, jurors allowed that to stand.

His sentencing date will be set March 25.
