MONTREAL - Accused separatist rally shooter Richard Henry Bain cried and ranted for several minutes Wednesday before a judge granted his lawyer permission to withdraw from the case.

Bain was despondent in a high-security prisoner's box, apparently upset at French-only documents although usual outbursts were muffled by centimetre-thick glass.

He'll have to continue his case without his lawyer, Elfreide Duclervil, who was granted a request to stop representing the 62-year-old murder suspect.

A judge agreed Wednesday that Bain, a fishing-lodge owner, was ineligible for legal aid.

He faces 16 charges after stage technician Denis Blanchette was shot and killed during Premier Pauline Marois' victory speech on the night of the Sept. 4 election.
