MONTREAL — Testimony by a bloodstain expert caused the father of a dismembered Chinese student to become faint and stumble out of a Montreal courtroom Friday.
It was Diran Lin's latest breakdown this week at a preliminary hearing for Luka Rocco Magnotta.
The 30-year-old former gay porn actor is charged in the murder and dismemberment of Jun Lin in Montreal last May.
The charges against the Toronto native include first-degree murder and indignity to a human body.
Evidence by bloodstain analyst Jacinthe Prevost prompted the victim's father to leave his seat and walk unsteadily out of the packed courtroom, propped up by his lawyer and a translator.
Quebec court Judge Lori-Renee Weitzman watched the scene with an expression of concern, but testimony continued.
Diran Lin returned but he later left the room a second time in tears.
A publication ban prevents media from reporting on the evidence that provoked the reaction.
Earlier on Friday, the janitor who worked at Magnotta's Montreal apartment took the stand.
At one point during Michael Nadeau's testimony, Magnotta's face turned red and he dabbed his eyes, bowed his head and put his hand on his chin.
It was the second straight day that the alleged body-parts killer appeared to show emotion.
The dismemberment case drew international attention following the murder, with Magnotta fleeing to Germany where he was arrested.
A young man who bears a resemblance to Magnotta has been in the courtroom this week, identifying himself as Kyle from Raleigh, N.C.
The slightly-built, boyish-looking man with sharp features and short brown hair says he drove 1,400 km over three days to watch the hearing.
He sat in the seat closest to Magnotta in the public gallery Friday, gazing at him several times.
Magnotta did not return the gaze.
Court officials pulled the man aside at one point and spoke to him, asking questions about his well-being.
The man later returned to court for the conclusion of Friday's proceedings.
