TORONTO -- Despite warnings about the dangers of illegal buttocks enhancements, police believe Toronto-area women continue to risk their lives to improve the look of their posterior.
Four months after arresting Marilyn Ely Reid, 46, on accusations of administering polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) injections without a licence, Toronto Police say more alleged victims have come forward with claims of botched butt jobs at the hands of the accused.
"All of them have had complications," Det. Louise Farrugia said Monday.
She said seven women have now come forward with complications, ranging in severity from minor to quite serious.
One woman actually came dangerously close to dying, said Farrugia, who added more charges are pending.
Reid, arrested in November, now faces a charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Farrugia said that based on her investigation, she believes there is at least one other alleged case of a woman in the city illegally injecting PMMA, a thick gel used to make acrylic glass and bovine collagen.
She has not yet been identified but many of her clients work in the adult entertainment industry.
"I'm told none of her clients have experienced complications, not yet anyway," Farrugia said.
She pointed out it's often only a matter of time until the PMMA becomes hard and lumpy or leads to an infection.
"It's rampant in the U.S.," she said. "We don't want that to happen in Canada."
Arrangements are typically made by e-mail or referral, and the injector meets the clients at their home or a hotel room to administer the PMMA.
The procedure costs thousands of dollars and clients pay cash, Farrugia said.
"The way it's being done is illegal," she said, adding it's a medical procedure done outside a medical facility, allegedly by people who are not licenced medical practitioners.
Farrugia also said PMMA, normally used by orthopaedic surgeons to remodel lost bone, should not be used for buttock enhancements.
"It's very dangerous," she said. "Anyone who has had this done should go see a plastic surgeon right away."
