An 18-year-old man died after a fight at a party early Saturday morning.
WINNIPEG - An 18-year-old man has died as the result of a "freak punch" during a fight with another party-goer at a house party in Transcona early Saturday, police said Sunday.
Police were dispatched to a home in the east end at 1 a.m. to answer a report of a disturbance and learned that the 18-year-old, who was suffering from life-threatening upper-body injuries from an assault, had been rushed to hospital. The victim later succumbed to his injuries. CTV has reported the identity of the victim as Christian Oneail of Winnipeg.
A 17-year-old Winnipeg boy is charged with manslaughter and is being detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
Neither teen lived at the residence and neither was known to police.
Police said "dozens of people" attended the party where the two became involved in an argument. The altercation turned physical, resulting in the victim sustaining the injuries. No one else was involved in the fight and no weapons were used.
"It was just one of those freak things," Const. Eric Hofley said of the punch. "People don't think of the possible consequences of what they might think is an innocent altercation. Fortunately, they don't happen that often."
