TORONTO – It was "simply impossible" for Dr. George Doodnaught to sexually molest 21 female patients during busy operations, his defence lawyer insisted in his closing submission Tuesday.
Brian Greenspan said the North York General anesthesiologist was a "touchy-feely" doctor but patients under conscious sedation were just imagining that he was fondling their breasts or placing his penis in their hands or mouths.
Physically, the operating table was too high to have even allowed any fellatio to take place, Greenspan told Justice David McCombs.
"This is an operating room, not Cirque de Soleil. Dr. Doodnaught is an anesthetist, not a contortionist,” he said, as one of Doodnaught's alleged victims wept softly from the courtroom's reserved row.
The prosecution has argued that Doodnaught may have been standing on a stool. Greenspan dismissed that as "a desperate, absurd suggestion to address this impossibility."
Doodnaught, 64, has pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting 21 female patients, ranging in age from 25 to 75.
