CALGARY — The admitted pedophile who tried to stem his urges through self castration was sentenced Friday to a three-year jail term.
But because of time already spent on remand, Patrick Bryan Ryckman will only have to serve an additional 18 months, Justice Vital Ouellette ruled.
And because Ouellette declined to hand Ryckman a sentence of more than two years on his latest child possession charges, the offender escaped a potential long-term offender label.
Although Ouellette found Ryckman was a high risk to reoffend if he didn't get sexual offender treatment, his crimes didn't warrant a sentence that would allow a long-term offender designation.
Instead, the judge ordered Ryckman to serve three years of probation, during which he must get treatment recommended by experts.
