WINNIPEG - A dog was struck with a sledgehammer during a robbery Friday.
Around 2 a.m., a suspect broke into an automotive business in the 400-block of Dawson Road North.
The suspect, in possession of a stolen truck, forced his way into the business, causing significant damage.
Once inside, automotive parts were stolen and loaded into the lifted truck.
The suspect then encountered a dog on the premises.
The dog was struck with a sledgehammer and injured.
The owner was notified of the break-in and called police, who arrived while the suspect was still on scene. They attempted to stop the suspect from fleeing but he took off in the truck. Police say the man was driving fast through a residential area and ignoring traffic signs.
At Speers Road and Dawson Road N, he sped over a ditch and jumped over a set of railway tracks.
He then stopped and fled on foot, entering a business in the area of the 500-block of Mission Street where he attempted to hide from police.
The WPS Canine Unit tracked the suspect to the business and arrested him.
Douglas James Sinclair, 34, faces charges including three counts of break and enter, flight from police, dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and injuring an animal. He was detained in custody.
