WINNIPEG — A man and a woman with Winnipeg connections were to appear in court Friday after the Canada Border Services Agency seized 800 grams of opium concealed in a framed picture last week in Montreal.
The CBSA turned the case over to the RCMP federal serious and organized crime unit after the opium was found Sept. 17 at a mail processing centre in Montreal.
RCMP say the drug was concealed in a wooden picture and that the package originated in Turkey. Although it was destined for a Winnipeg address, RCMP do not believe that was its final destination.
Hussein Khalilzadeh Nikbin, 47, and Patricia Louise Gauthier, 45, were arrested and face drug charges.
Karpish said a seizure of this sort is quite rare for Manitoba.
“In Manitoba, the drug of choice is marijuana and cocaine,” she said. “I’ve been in this province for many years and I can’t say I’ve come across opium in my service. Opium, in speaking to the (investigating) unit, it is very rare for them.”
