A mould infestation that plagued the aging Don Jail earlier this year resulted in at least 75 complaints from guards and inmates, according to a document obtained by the Toronto Sun.
A briefing note to the deputy minister of correctional services and community safety — obtained through a Freedom of Information request — says 34 correctional officers and 41 inmates filed formal complaints about the mould infestation. The five-page memo provides a timeline of events from the discovery of the “fungal deposits” on Dec. 31, 2012 to clean-up efforts in April 2013.
The note also makes mention of a single jail guard who complained to the Ministry of Labour. At the time, the Ministry of Labour told the Sun that the guard had refused to report to work, but the document disputes that.
