Police say a fatal strip-mall shooting in Conception Bay South, N.L., Tuesday night and a sudden death at a cemetery in nearby St. John's Wednesday morning were a double murder-suicide.
The shooting at the strip mall put the small town of Conception Bay South on lockdown. People were asked to remain in their homes after shots rang out shortly after 7 p.m. at the Villa Nova Plaza.
A man and a woman, both 35, were shot and killed in a doctor's office and the suspect was on the loose overnight.
The strip mall was evacuated and local schools were closed Wednesday while cops hunted the shooter.
Wednesday morning, cops shut down a St. John's cemetery to investigate a death.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed Wednesday afternoon the two cases were related, deeming them a double murder-suicide.
"The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary does not believe that there is a public safety concern as this matter was not a random act. The victims and the accused were known to one another," police said in a statement.
Cops have not released any information about the person found dead in the cemetery and are withholding the strip mall victims' names out "of respect for the family members."
Police also spoke to a person of interest Wednesday in Conception Bay South. RNC denied media reports this visit resulted in a standoff.
