An Edmonton man who accidentally dragged a pit bull behind his pickup truck for several blocks -- resulting in severe injuries to the dog -- was fined $3,000 Wednesday.
Calvin Wade Kidder, 34, was also banned from owning any pets for 15 years, other than his fiancee's cat, after pleading guilty to a charge under the Animal Protection Act of causing or permitting an animal to be in distress.
"This is more a case of negligence," said Crown prosecutor Christian Lim, who told Provincial Court that the Crown was not saying Kidder intended to drag the dog.
Court heard police were contacted after people saw Nalla, a brown and white, female six-year-old pit bull, being dragged behind Kidder's Dodge Ram pickup truck near 92 Street and 114 Avenue about 2:45 p.m. on April 23.
"They saw the dog yelping in distress behind the vehicle," said Lim, adding the witnesses were "screaming" at Kidder to stop the pickup, but he couldn't hear them because he was listening to music.
